A day for love

As you all know yesterday was Valentine’s Day. Now February the 14th has never been particularly important to me, perhaps because in the past I never had that special someone to share the day with, but that all changed this year. However, February the 14th 2012 was different to all previous Valentines Days not just because I actually had someone to spend it with, but rather because I had someone to spend rather a lot of money on…
According to figures published this week, us Brits were estimated to spend over £880 million celebrating this particular day, though interestingly, most of this money was apparently spent by men. A study of 5,000 adults showed that men will have spent on average £611million on their presents for their other halves, whereas, women would have only shelled out £269m to celebrate yesterday. Interesting no? Perhaps because Valentine’s Day provides men with the opportunity to be all cute and mushy for one day and one day only, or maybe because if he didn’t spend, he certainly wouldn’t be spending the next February the 14th with the same girl!
This whole thing made me wonder, is it really necessary to spend such obscene amounts of money to celebrate a day that is merely intended to express love and sentiment to your significant other? The answer, I believe, is no!
Do we honestly believe that a bunch of flowers or a cheesy card really says “I love you” like the real thing? Well I did this year, but from now on I have decided to play it old school; whether it’s writing a note, making a card or cooking the boyfriend dinner, I plan to avoid the cheesiness (but still have a bit of cuteness!).
I believe that the expression of true feelings should not be ascribed a value. And so I urge you, let’s halt the commercialisation of Valentine’s Day and go back to its roots and celebrate it properly.  Who’s with me?
